The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
