RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
